Meet Suzanne Horvitz and Robert Roesch, the Artists Behind This Year’s Award Art

For over 15 years, Suzanne Horvitz and Robert Roesch have collaborated on major artworks throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and China. Now they’ve teamed up with the Arts + Business Council to create unique works of art which will be presented to each of the winners at the 32nd annual Arts + Business Council Awards Celebration.

Robert and Suzanne work on the Awards in their studio

Suzanne and Robert’s Philly roots run deep: the two artists live in Philadelphia, where Robert serves as Chair of Sculpture at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and is one of the 8 members of the Philadelphia Art Commission, and Horvitz was the founder and director of Foundation for Today’s Art/Nexus Gallery. Still, there is no question that these two artists are citizens of the world. After serving as Cultural Advisors to US Embassies in Japan, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Syria, Argentina, Ecuador, and Myanmar, Suzanne and Robert were selected by the government of China to complete three solar sculptures for the 2016 G-20 Summit. Their personal work has been exhibited and collected by famed institutions like Musée D’Art Moderne in Paris; the Glasmuseum in Denmark; and the Paper Museum in Tokyo among other major museums around the globe.

“We combined images that represent the visual arts, music, and culture,” they said of their approach to creating this year’s Awards. “The 3D printed platform and pyramid-shaped stairway represent creation and a place of regeneration. Stairways have always represented journeys to us, and the act of ascending a staircase symbolizes a positive journey upwards. The painting of Drifting Sirens with a lyre represents the ‘siren song,’ referring to an appeal that is hard to resist, and the lure of beauty. We see stairways as a link connecting things: the ideas and ideals contained in art, culture, and the business world.”
