Business + Arts Partnership Award 2017 Winners
- Taller Puertorriqueño – Carmen Febo San Miguel, Executive Director
- PECO – Liz A. Murphy, Senior Vice President, Regulatory and External Affairs
Taller Puertorriqueño has received support from PECO for its education and visual arts programs for a number of years. But the relationship really blossomed as Taller was completing construction of its new home—a 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art building within the city’s largest and poorest Puerto Rican/Latino neighborhood. The new space creates a cultural hub and a crossroads for Latino arts and culture in our city. PECO’s partnership was instrumental in supporting efforts to make the special events surrounding this extraordinary project very visible to the community at large. PECO was the primary sponsor for the building’s ground-breaking ceremony in September 2015, as well as for the grand opening of El Corazón Cultural Center at 2600 N. 5th Street in December 2016. In addition, PECO employees were involved in planning and promoting these events, lending support on marketing, programming and logistics. The two-day opening celebration featured performances from Puerto Rico, Massachusetts, New York and Philadelphia. The inaugural exhibit “Our Theme: Call and Response” featured work from Taller’s permanent collection and was inspired by the tradition of Puerto Rico’s Bomba music, to stimulate dialogue between the public and the selected works of art. This transformative community space stands proud and full of promise in the heart of “The Barrio,” thanks to PECO and many others who turned the dream of a new facility into a reality.
