Business Volunteers for the Arts Volunteer of the Year Award 2018 Winner William H. Haines, IV

Founded in 2000, ArtWell provides free multidisciplinary arts programs to Philadelphia’s under-resourced schools and organizations. Since its founding, the organization has had a very passionate and active board, but historically struggled to engage diverse community members, especially those who represented skillsets and industries beyond the art, activist and education worlds. To strengthen and diversify the organization, the Arts + Business Council, throug its pro bono platform, matched ArtWell with William (Bill) Haines, IV. The resulting impact was truly incredible.

First, Bill helped ArtWell to create a robust board development strategy that included a list of prospects who were aligned with its mission and strategic goals. Second, Bill coached ArtWell leadership and staff through outreach and engagement techniques that resulted in building the most diverse, skilled, and committed board in the organization’s history. And finally, Bill helped them to refine their board processes in order to ensure that all future board recruitment and engagement activities would follow the same protocol. Thanks to Bill’s dedicated work with ArtWell, they now have a board that accurately represents the community they serve, and includes passionate, informed, and connected individuals who can help advance its mission for decades to come.
